On some systems (discovered on DEC Alpha OSF1 V5), static variables in inline functions are not allowed. In this particular case, there also seems no reason to make the variable static, as the compiler might even be able to optimize access to it away sometimes, and it doesn't harm to make it non-static.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.
