Windows platform?</a></h3>

<p>
First the good news: yes, you can. Still, this answer needs to be
more specific. The configuration program for
<acronym>deal.II</acronym> expects a Unix-like environment. This is
provided by the <a href="http://www.cygwin.com/">cygwin
compiler</a>. People reported successful compilation with the
following combination of tools:
<ul>
<li> cygwin 1.3.9-1
<li> make 3.79.1-5
</ul>
Earlier versions caused trouble, still you should try the latest
versions first. A look into the <a
href="http://gaia.iwr.uni-heidelberg.de/~deal/mail/maillist.html">mail
archive</a> might be advisable in case of difficulties.
</p>

<h4>Other Windows compilers</h4>
<p>
Authomatic configuration requires a lot of Unix tools. We have not
heard of anybody trying to generate the necessary files to compile
with any of the genuine Windows compilers. And, we do not encourage
to change a lot of files to make this possible. Still, if you see a
simple and clean way to make <acronym>deal.II</acronym> work with
any other Windows compiler, get in contact!
